Builders Hardware Standards Assure Quality and Compatibility

Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) fills a leadership role in the areas of quality and performance of builders’ hardware. BHMA members manufacture and sell builders hardware in the United States. BHMA provides a collective voice for members on issues of concern to hardware manufacturers. BHMA is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). In addition to standards development, BHMA sponsors third-party certification of builders hardware products; provides technical experts to interface with regulatory agencies including building codes, fire, and life safety groups; and delivers members market information and industry statistics.

The BHMA standards collection offered by IHS covers topics such as

  • pedestrian doors
  • locks and latches
  • architectural trim
  • hinges
  • thresholds
  • door gasketing
  • master keying systems
  • fire exit hardware
  • emergency egress alarms
  • folding doors
  • sliding doors
  • window latches and locks

Staying current with product requirements minimizes issues on the job regarding building code compliance. When specifying or purchasing builders hardware for fire exits, door hardware for sliding doors, or window latches, the use of BHMA standards assures that the products delivered are the products you expect. Purchasing builders hardware from hardware manufacturers that take the step of BHMA certification for their products assures that the hinges, latches, and locks installed on your project meet quality and performance requirements.

IHS offers standards in both hardcopy and online subscription formats. The right purchase option for you depends on your company’s standards use considering factors such as the number of users, where your engineers or technical staff need access to the standards, and when they need standards. To maintain compliance with copyright restrictions, IHS has worked with BHMA to assure that purchase options deliver customers, the flexibility they need while protecting the intellectual property of BHMA.

Whether you specify hardware for large commercial buildings or design new hardware to bring to market, using BHMA standards provides you with the information you need for a successful project. Contact a standards subject matter expert from IHS t determine the best standards purchase option to fully meet the builders hardware standards needs of your company.
