Underground Storage Tank Certification Helps States Meet Federal Regulations

December 22, 2005

The International Code Council (ICC) offers certification on underground storage tanks (UST) to help states qualify for federal funds.

The UST Compliance Act of 2005 requires the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop guidelines for UST operator training. Once established, state environmental protection departments must implement training programs to receive federal funds.

ICC programs for UST operators, technicians and inspectors test for the knowledge of laws, regulations and standards needed to oversee equipment and protect the environment from hazardous leakage of underground tanks.

The ICC offers certification examinations in several UST categories including installation/retrofitting, decommissioning, tank tightness testing, cathodic protection and other UST regulations.
