The new code, BS 6576:2005 - Code of practice for diagnosis of rising damp in walls of buildings and installation of chemical damp-proof courses - gives increased emphasis and guidance on the need for careful diagnosis to distinguish rising damp from other explanations for damp conditions. It also includes the new materials and techniques covered in recent Agrément Certificates and addresses their position and advantages under current safety legislation.

There are now 15 Agrément Certificates for chemical damp-proof systems, covering 29 commercial products and all available materials and techniques. It is anticipated this new code will be incorporated into all new and existing BBA certificates.

The BBA issued its first certificate for a chemical damp-proof system 1974. It was first known as the British Chemical DPC Manufacturers’ Association, then became the British Chemical Damp Coursing Association, and is now part of the British Wood Preserving and Damp-Proofing Association (BWDPA).

The BBA developed the test methods which were originally prepared by the Trade Associations, and are now available in MOAT No 39:1988.

In the mid 1980s, BSI Committee ECB 37 began work on chemical damp-proofing. The committee used the British Chemical Damp Coursing Association’s Code as the basis for BS 6576:1985 - Code of Practice for Installation of chemical damp-proof courses.
