Building Research Establishment Ltd. (BRE) announced the availability of an updated version of the energy calculation software SBEM v1.2.a, which is available as a free downloaded (http://www.ncm.bre.co.uk/).

The software was designed to enable designers to demonstrate compliance with Part L2A of the new Building Regulations 2000 for England and Wales for non-domestic buildings that came into effect in April 2006.

The SBEM v1.2.a update was updated in response to user feedback and incorporates a number of improvements to the way calculations are made and data is entered. Apart from correcting a few minor bugs, the main changes include:

  • Broadening the scope to allow demonstration of compliance with equivalent Building Regulations in Northern Ireland.
  • Revised default values for thermal bridges.
  • Simplification of some heat, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) ventilation definitions.
  • Easier entry of data applicable to the whole building.
  • Modifications to underlying databases in order to improve accuracy.
Designers of new projects are expected to begin using the updated version immediately. Teams working on projects where a previous SBEM version was already employed do not have to make the switch to the updated version during the design and building control process.
