The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Certification Standard for Bridge and Highway Metal Component Manufacturers began a second period of public review beginning Oct. 7 and concluding on Oct. 28, 2008.
The AISC Certification Committee approved this standard.
This second review period provides individuals and organizations that may be affected by implementation of the standard an opportunity to share concerns and offer suggestions and recommendations on the changes made since the first public review, which concluded July 27, 2007.
The Certification Standard for Bridge and Highway Metal Component Manufacturers will support a new AISC certification program.
According to AISC, the Bridge Component Manufacturer Certification will confirm to owners, design professionals and the construction industry that a firm has the personnel, organization, experience, procedures, knowledge, equipment and commitment to produce components of the quality required for normal bridge and highway construction.
Certification to this standard will be appropriate for manufacturers of components that include bracing not designed for primary loads (diaphragms, cross frames and lateral bracing); camera, light, sign and signal support structures; bridge rail; stairs; walkways; grid decks; drains; scuppers; expansion joints; bearings; ballast plates and mechanical movable bridge equipment.
AISC said it anticipates that the Bridge Component Manufacturer Certification program will provide a means for qualifying firms and serve as a way for steel bridge fabricators and manufacturers participating in the program to communicate their commitment and capability with respect to quality.
The bridge component standard is expected to be finalized later this year with the Component Manufacturer Certification program becoming available to the industry by the end of 2008.
