An agreement between the International Code Council (ICC) and the Instituto Uruguayo de Normas Tecnicas (UNIT) seeks to promote the health, safety and welfare of the Uruguayan people through the creation and maintenance of safer buildings.

ICC and UNIT will work together on initiatives to advance the science of building and fire safety, and share knowledge about construction codes and standards.

ICC said it will work with UNIT to identify areas where the ICC International Codes, standards and support services can assist Uruguayan regulatory efforts.

UNIT has agreed to work with the ICC to promote worldwide acceptance and use of the International Codes and Standards.

"It is clear that building safety efforts should not be limited by national borders," said Rick Weiland, ICC CEO.

"The code council is pleased to collaborate with UNIT to spread the important message of building safety and the important role code officials and others responsible for constructing to code - or first preventers - provide globally to save lives and protect property. The agreement also leverages our respective resources and efforts to benefit the citizens we serve globally," Weiland said.

"In order to promote the ICC codes in our country, it was of fundamental importance to be able to have these codes in our documentation center," Pablo Benia, UNIT director, said.

"This is possible now thanks to this agreement. The industry, professionals and technical sector know these publications, but many times given the lack of easy access to them, these professional groups end up using norms of another origin," Benia said.
