NAHB, ICC Partner for Residential Green Building American National Standard

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the International Code Council (ICC) plan to jointly develop an American National Standard for residential green building based on the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines (2004).

Accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the NAHB Research Center is seeking additional participants - to be considered, applications must be received by March 10, 2007.

According to NAHB, its members requested a national reference for green homebuilding. ICC, also an ANSI-accredited standards developer, has promoted green building requirements through its International Codes and also recognized the need for a national set of standards for home builders and others wishing to voluntarily adopt "above-code" practices.

The new standard will be designed to provide a common benchmark for recognizing and rewarding green residential design, development and construction practices in a manner that is transparent and verifiable to builders, product manufacturers and consumers, the groups said.

The NAHB Research Center will serve as secretariat of the standards development committee, which will follow rules and procedures in accordance with ANSI requirements for openness, balance, consensus and due process.

The committee plans to hold its initial meeting in late April.

The entire process - from the formation of the consensus committee to public review and final ANSI approval - is slated for completion by the end of 2008.
