Guidance on building security and emergency planning and response while practicing good sustainability measures will be presented in a free public session scheduled for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Inc. (ASHRAE) 2008 winter meeting.
The ASHRAE meeting is slated for Jan. 19 - 23 at the New York Hilton.
The free public session, titled HVAC Designs for Security and Sustainability, will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Javits Convention Center. Attendees receive two New York-approved professional development hours (PDHs) in addition to the free admission.
"Attacks involving chemical and/or biological agents (CBAs) are among the most dreaded because of the ease with which they can be produced and disseminated as well as their fatal potency," said moderator Harmohindar Singh, Ph.D.
"Because of the threat posed by CBA, building professionals should be educated about what they are, possible scenarios of their release, how they may be detected and how buildings may be immunized against such threats," Singh said.
"At the same time, engineers and architects need to address the building's overall impact on the environment as security and other measures are put in place. Safety and sustainability can work hand in hand to protect occupants and preserve the environment."
The public session is one of 27 programs presented during the ASHRAE meeting that are approved for New York PDHs. The technical program, presented Jan. 20 - 23 at the New York Hilton and Javits Convention Center, focuses on net-zero energy use and includes a sustainability track of sessions.
