Working With Standards: An Insider's Perspective

New Standards and Publications

With the new year comes an avalanche of new standards being released. Some of these developed for the construction industry include standards created by the American Concrete Institute; the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers; the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America; the National Fire Protection Association; the Sheet Metal and Air-Conditioning Contractors National Association; and the Society for Protective Coatings.

American Concrete Institute (ACI)

ACI 318-05/318R-05, Building Code Regulations for Structural Concrete and Commentary. This standard offers the latest code requirements for concrete building design and construction. A metric version is scheduled for release this summer.

ACI 303R-04, Guide to Cast-in-Place Architectural Concrete Practice. This document provides guidelines for producing cast-in-place architectural concrete.

ACI 524.R-04, Guide to Portland Cement-Based Plaster. This guide offers a wide range of information on the plastering process, including the prequalification of materials, plaster tool and equipment requirements, plaster mixture proportions, plaster application procedures, types of finishes, and troubleshooting and repair.

American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)

ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2004, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality. Released in January, this standard specifies minimum ventilation rates and indoor air quality requirements for commercial and industrial buildings.

ANSI/ASHRAE 15-2004, Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems. This new standard is an update of the guidelines published in 2001, and includes changes regarding safety relief venting.

Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA)

AEDG-1-05, Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small Office Buildings. This new document is designed to provide guidelines for the construction of energy-efficient buildings. It promises to deliver the tools needed to construct buildings that increase energy savings by 30 percent when compared to buildings that only meet the minimum requirements of Standard 90.1.

ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2004, Energy Standard for Building Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. This edition is an update of Standard 90.1-2001, and provides the minimum requirements for the energy-efficient design of buildings other than low-rise residences.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

NFPA 70, 2005 National Electrical Code. The world’s most widely adopted safety code has now been updated. The 50th edition offers additional safety requirements to protect against electrical fires and shock hazards.

Sheet Metal and Air-conditioning Contractors’ National Association, Inc. (SMACNA)

Architectural Sheet Metal Inspection Guide. This first edition manual provides guidelines on inspecting standing seam, batten seam, and Bermuda-type roofs. It offers information on dealing with problems associated with roof panels, gutters, downspouts, fascia, copings, flashing, ridges and hips, valleys, expansion joints, penetrations, fasteners, and soldering.

Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC)

Systems and Specifications: SSPC Painting Manual, Volume 2, 2005 Edition. This three-ring binder offers a complete, up-to-date collection of SSPC standards, guides, specifications, and other consensus documents for the cleaning and preparation of steel and concrete surfaces, the selection and application of protective coating systems, the composition and performance capabilities of paints and coatings, and other materials, processes, and technologies.

SSPC Basic Spray Application Manual. This new training manual offers guidelines on the spray application of paints and coatings. It includes information on surface preparation, spray application equipment and operation, application basics, maintenance work, failure analysis and remedies, and safety highlights.
