U.K. Publishes Tech Guidance for Code for Sustainable Homes

The U.K. Communities and Local Government published technical guidance for the Code for Sustainable Homes standard to help the building industry deliver improvements to the energy efficiency of new homes.

The manual set the requirements for the code, and the process by which a code assessment is reached. The code was designed to help deliver homes that use less energy and produce fewer carbon dioxide emissions as well as cut down on water used and generated waste.

According to the government, the code will give homeowners better information about costs associated with running their homes.

The government set a goal that all new homes will be zero carbon by 2016 and intends to use the code to measure progress. The technical guidance will explain to code assessors, homebuilders, product manufacturers and consumers how code levels can be achieved.

"Homes account for more than a quarter of carbon emissions …. Building the right type of sustainable homes for future generations is one way in which we can help achieve a 60% reduction in emissions by 2050," Communities and Local Government Minister Angela Smith said.
