Walls, windows and doors
Performance, diagnosis, maintenance, repair and the avoidance of defects
This third book in the BRE Building Elements series considers the main vertical elements of buildings, both external (including walls, windows and doors) and internal (including separating walls, partitions and internal doors). It deals in outline with the performance requirements of the spaces from which the required performances of the walls are derived, and also, in principle, with the achieved performances and deficiencies of the fabric over the whole age range of the national building stock. This book is addressed primarily to building surveyors and other professionals performing similar functions, such as architects and builders, who maintain, repair, extend and renew the national building stock. It will also find application in the education field, where lecturers can find indication of where the construction syllabus needs attention. Statistics are given of BRE Advisory Service investigations of walls by type of defect and by type of building.

Understanding dampness
Despite all the technical advice that has been published about dampness in the past there is still a significant set of problems. This book seeks to address them. With an emphasis on existing buildings and some coverage of the design of new build, it lists the causes of dampness and explores its effects. It also discusses the maintenance of protection against dampness, and remedies for the problems dampness can cause.

It gives the busy building professional the starting points for selection and specification and will equip the designer to talk to specialists with a sound understanding of key principles. The book is based on key sustainable design requirements, in particular, how to achieve a long life, limit maintenance requirements and defects, and provide guidance on designing for the future, while respecting the environment and social requirements. It has been written by a multi-disciplinary team of authors from BRE, the UK's leading centre of excellence on buildings and the built environment. It is fully up-to-date with UK regulations and standards and is as a 'one-stop-shop' for understanding the key principles of building behaviour. It is highly illustrated with diagrams and with photographs illustrating actual building performance.

ECOHOMES - the environmental rating for homes
Considers the broad environmental concerns of climate change, resource use and impact on wildlife, but balances these against the needs for a high quality, safe and healthy internal environment. Issues assessed are grouped into seven categories: energy, transport, pollution, materials, water, ecology and land use, and health and well being. Provides a credible, transparent label for new and converted/renovated homes, including houses, apartments and sheltered accommodation. The document also contains a Rating Prediction Checklist.

Fire safety engineering
This guide provides basic descriptions for a number of key topics encountered in fire safety engineering and aspects that should be considered by designers, enforcers and other responsible persons. It is a reference for those who only occasionally encounter different aspects of fire safety engineering or are new to the subject. For more experienced practitioners it provides a useful short cut to finding information in more detailed references. The text is formatted so that the user can annotate their own copy to build a personalised desktop reference to their own application of fire safety engineering. The guide is divided into eight main sections: general topics (eg the laws of thermodynamics), fire growth, smoke spread and control, structural fire protection, detection and suppression, Fire Service intervention, human factors, and risk assessment. The report ends with a short list of references and a detailed index.

The first five chapters of the book cover regulations and legislation for foundations and contaminated land, types of ground, soil behaviour and ground assessment. Two chapters focus on foundation design and foundations on difficult ground. Brownfield land and ground treatment are then discussed, and the last three chapters deal with foundation movement and damage, remedial treatment and underpinning, and ancillary works (hardcore, soakaways, drains, small embankments, small retaining walls, freestanding walls).years.

Reuse of foundations for urban sites – Proceedings of the International Conference
Redevelopment and regeneration of urban areas have left a legacy of old foundations, congested underground space and archaeological artefacts. This legacy compromises new developments and the project 'Reuse of Foundations for Urban Sites' (RuFUS), partly funded by the EU, has developed and proving new processes to provide environmentally sustainable foundations for future developments. This volume presents papers by the RuFUS project partners and authors from Europe and further afield. It provides valuable technical information and case studies on successful reuse of foundations, and extends the guidance presented in the RuFUS best practice handbook.
